Caring Connections

Caring Connections began in September 2020 through a collaboration between LITA and Vivalon, a Marin-based nonprofit. The program was created when Vivalon’s Executive Director noticed that many older adults receiving meal deliveries showed signs of loneliness and social isolation. Vivalon asked these individuals if they would enjoy regular visits from friendly volunteers. When they said yes, LITA stepped in. That’s how our visiting program for older adults living at home got its start.

How it Works Today:

In addition to referrals from Vivalon, LITA is contacted by family members, neighbors, and friends of older adults who would benefit from companionship. Volunteers in this program are background-checked, and LITA staff visit the home to ensure it is a safe and appropriate environment for everyone involved.

We are currently welcoming new clients—as well as volunteers who can commit to weekly visits with a lonely or isolated older adult. Many of our clients are homebound and may go days or even weeks without meaningful interaction. Volunteers are matched based on shared interests and typically spend 20–60 minutes a week with their new friend, either in person or by phone. LITA provides training and ongoing support to help volunteers feel confident and connected.

If you’d like to help reduce isolation and bring joy to someone in your community, we’d love to hear from you.

Funding for this program is provided in part by the Marin County Area Agency on Aging.
